Activision letting go of Infinity Ward heads

March 2, 2010

“A bunch of bouncer-type” dudes showed up at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward’s offices in Encino, Cal. yesterday and would not disclose to staff members why they were there, after Activision held a meeting with two of the studio’s higher-ups, Frank West and and Vince Zampella. The two have not been seen or  in touch with anyone at the studio since the meeting, according to G4, who spoke with a source within the studio.

Activision, which owns the studio, also filed an SEC 10-K form yesterday morning, citing an HR investigation into “breaches of contract and insubordination by two senior employees at Infinity Ward.” The two employees may very well be West and Zampella. West’s facebook account’s status read “Jason West is drinking. Also, no longer employed,” and his Linkedin profile lists his time at Infity Ward as September 2001 to March 2010.

“This matter is expected to involve the departure of key personnel and litigation,” read the SEC filing. “At present, the Company does not expect this matter to have a material impact on the Company.”

According to MTV Games, Activision confirmed that West is no longer with the company.

We’ll keep you updated once Acitivsion and/or Infinity Ward make a statement on the matter.

I’m not sure what the insubordination was all about, but I could not be happier than I am right now. BF BC2 was just released today and IW is in turmoil. Infinity Ward represents everything that PC gaming and gamers are NOT about! I am a PC gamer and want to play PC games the way they were intended to be played; on DEDICATED SERVERS! I choose NOT to play the way that IW wants me too or tells me to. I did not buy their game and will never. I will never buy another IW PC game again if they continue to not include dedicated servers.
YOU BLEW IT IW! You broke so many sales records selling to console gamers and totally abandoned the PC gamers. PC gamers made you what you are today!
I am very happy to see Activision take a stance and try to repair their broken image with the PC gamer communities.
IW Net is a total failure and was NEVER about stopping cheaters and piracy. It was always about the money. it’s much cheaper to make a game for console and port it over to PC, then create a medium for DLC and an annual pay system for Pc’s like XBox Live.

I absolutely love seeing the turmoil at IW it makes me very happy!

Interesting point of view, Scott. I’m sure Modern Warfare fans, even those on the PC who were a bit reluctant to play it without dedicated servers, still might wonder if the quality of future COD titles will be able to compete with the Bad Companies and Medal of Honors of the world.

      Scott,

Apparently unnamed sources have told BingeGamer that the insubordination came from secret meetings Zampella and West had with rival publishers.
