Atari announces Test Drive Unlimited 2, will have “persistent online environment”

March 3, 2010

M.O.O.R is what they’re calling it. What does it stand for? Massively Open Online Racing. I guess MMORG was taken, or looked too similar to MMORPG. Personally, I would’ve gone with RGYCPOIAGCWYF (Racing Game You Can Play Online In a Giant City With Your Friends), but I think I may be a little ahead of my time.

Anyway, Atari says this new Test Drive will revolutionize mutiplayer racing communities with the help of M.O.O.R and an “open world experience with realistic vehicles and performance dynamics.” They’re saying the game is “always live,” providing automatic updates and “seamless online/offline” integration. While the game’s campaign will also be integrated to the online experience, those who still don’t want to play their racing games online will have the option to do so.

And for the first time in the series, something will actually happen to your car if you ram it headfirst into a light pole — there will be vehicle damage. They’re also boasting about new weather effects, a day and night cycle, and a brand new island to explore. Yes, that’s right! Test Drive Unlimited 2 will not take place on the same island as the previous iteration!

Sarcasm aside, another “Massively Open Online” Test Drive sounds like fun. Let’s see how it stacks up with the other racer claiming to revolutionize online multiplayer racing: Blur. The Eden Games-developed racer’s release date is TBD.
