Square Enix President thinks XIII could have been better

March 26, 2010

Yoichi Wada, president of Square Enix, thinks that Final Fantasy XIII, which has gotten mixed reviews since its release, could have been a much better title but at the expense of keeping development costs down.

“I believe this is a well done game, however there are points we could improve on,” Wada said in an interview with Siliconera. “In order to realize those improvements we would have to incur more development costs. Therefore, I would rather not elaborate on that.”

Having played through a portion of the title so far with whatever time I can find to flip on the PlayStation 3, there are points where the game does feel lacking, at least compared to earlier titles in the series… and I don’t mean the on-rails feel or lack of towns.

It’s possible we’ll see these nagging issues — Wada didn’t comment further on which portions of the game he thought were weaker — ironed out on the eventual International re-release in Japan that a few other Square Enix received.

[Thanks Siliconera!]
