Spider-Man: Shattered Dimension’s veil of secrecy, er, shatters

March 31, 2010

Don’t worry true believers, you won’t have to wait until WonderCon to get some details about Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.  Various sites on the Internets already have previews up for the game, and today, we’re bringing you a trailer and some screenshots, as well as some previously unknown info. about the game.

It appears that the shattered dimensions in, well, Shattered Dimensions, will actually be four different Spider-Man universes. Activision has revealed two of the worlds so far — the traditional Amazing universe and the Noir universe. Hit the jump for the details and some screens, and be sure to check out the trailer above.

Each universe will have its own look and play style, with the Amazing universe featuring a colorful palette and an emphasis on web-based combat and the Noir universe, which is a spin on Spidey’s origin story as if it happened in the ’30s, has a darker visual style with gameplay focusing around stealth. Looking at the Noir universe in action, I feel like Beenox was really inspired by Batman: Arkham Asylum, which is definitely not a bad thing.

As far as the story goes, Spidey is trying to collect the “Table of Order and Chaos,” which has probably been shattered and sent into different dimensions, explaining why you’ll be playing in different universes in the first place. So far, Activision has revealed Kraven as one of the baddies in the Amazing universe, and Spidey will be chasing him (for a change) in a jungle — meaning there won’t be any buildings to sling and cling to. The Noir universe will feature Hammerhead, who wasn’t in the comic book version of Noir, but apparently fits into the darker universe pretty well.

The other two dimensions haven’t been revealed yet, but that won’t stop me from making some bold assumptions. I expect the remaining two dimensions to be the Spider-Man 2099 universe and then either the Ultimate universe or the 1800 universe. So far, the Noir universe looks the most intriguing to me.

The game has also been confirmed for a September 2010 release for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and DS. We’ll probably get more details once WonderCon comes around, so stick around, and don’t forget to check out the trailer above see Shattered Dimensions in action.

It has been a long time since I collected comics, but I do remember enjoying Spiderman 2099. That story would make a fun game, but of course it wouldn’t be the same story. We’ll just have to see what they might make it into. The Noir style does look interesting. I hope this is a Spiderman game I could have fun with. The last one that was remotely fun was the one that had the Bruce Campbell tutorial.

I never read the 2099 comics, but I do remember thinking Spidey’s costume design was horrendous. Yeah, Noir does look really cool. I actually wouldn’t mind a whole Noir spin-off game. It would be a nice break from the “conventional” Spidey titles coming out. The Bruce Campbell tutorials, if I’m not mistaken were in the movie games… I’m not sure which one of it was in all of them. But, yeah, it has been a while since I had an enjoyable wall-crawling experience.

    Bring me some pizza, btw.
