Settlers 7 latest in Ubisoft DRM woes

April 7, 2010

Since its launch two weeks ago, users of PC-strategy Settlers 7 have been reporting issues when connecting to the Internet to play — enough to have over  52 pages worth of complaints in a topic on Ubisoft’s official forums.

The issue is caused by technical difficulties when connecting to Ubisoft’s digital rights management authentication server, resulting in players being unable to play the game at all.

Ubisoft is no stranger to issues with its DRM system, as seen in the controversy regarding Assassin’s Creed II, despite that incident reportedly being caused by denial of service attacks on the server.

Over on Eurogamer, a representative from the developer said that “technical teams have made progress but we are not yet able to say that the issue is completely resolved.”

Maybe Ubisoft can turn all these problems with their DRM system into a new marketing gimmick, sort of a “delay” on a game’s release date.
