XCOM being re-imagined as ‘mystery-filled’ FPS by 2K

April 14, 2010

Remember those outer-spacey ’90s action and strategy games called X-COM? We haven’t seen one since 1998’s X-COM: Interceptor, the fourth installment in the series, and hasn’t really been on the minds of the mainstream gamer for… well, a while.

2K Games is hoping to change that, with their announcement of a “re-imagining” of the classic franchise today. This time around, the game will be a first-person shooter with a “suspense-filled narrative,” according to 2K. The title is being developed by 2K Marin, the studio (mostly) behind Bioshock 2. It’ll release exclusively on the Xbox 360 and PC.

Aside from some minor details about the story (you play as an FBI agent who must identify and eliminate “the growing threat), 2K offered no further information about the game. We did get a pretty announcement screenshot, though. Check it out above.

With the original X-COM considered one of the greatest PC games of all time, 2K Marin has a very tall bar to leap over. Who’s lookin’ forward to this one? Let us know what you think by dropping us a comment!
