Peace Walker less peaceful outside of Japan

April 16, 2010

With Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker rated T (ages 13 and up) by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board in North America, the game will be receiving some cuts in Japan to lower the rating the Computer Entertainment Rating Organization bestows on the title.

Peace Walker has a CERO rating of C, or 15 years old and up, in Japan. To get this rating and not the higher D rating (17 and up), Hideo Kojima stated on his Twitter that the developer made some alterations, such as removing blood.

In addition, one “absolutely standard bit” for the Metal Gear Solid series was removed from the Japanese version in favor of an altered scene. This is no doubt referencing to the series staple of torture scenes. This section will be left in its original form for the American and European releases.

This isn’t the first time a game with blood and gore has been censored in Japan, but left alone in other regions, such as Resident Evil 4, No More Heroes, and Ninja Gaiden.
