Buy (new copy) of Alan Wake, get first DLC free

May 2, 2010

In their push to sway you from purchasing of used copy of the upcoming psychological thriller game Alan Wake, Microsoft is letting those who purchase a standard or limited edition of Remedy Entertainment’s latest download the game’s first DLC for zilch.

A code will be embedded with each new copy of the game, which will serve as your redeemable code to download the first DLC when it releases later this year. I guess it’s not entirely comparable to what was done with the Cerberus Network in Mass Effect 2 (which costs you $15 to be a part of if you bought a used copy of the game), but nonetheless, it’s interesting to see how publishers are now concerned with taking back some sales from the used game world. Is free DLC enough to get you to purchase a slightly more expensive new copy of Alan Wake? Either way, get those flashlights ready; the game hits shelves May 18.

I’ve read about a lot of developers considering this to deter people from buying second-hand, not the the extremes of Mass Effect 2 but very similar to what the guys behind Alan Wake are doing. I think it’s a good idea in general, it’s about time gamers were rewarded for supporting developers directly with their money.

Agreed. Developers should be paid for their hard work after all, no?
