Microsoft won’t kill the Halo 2 Twelve

May 3, 2010

Last month, Microsoft finally pulled the plug on Xbox Live support for the original Xbox and its titles. However, a group of fourteen players — now down to twelve — have circumvented the drop of support by keeping their systems on all the time and their accounts logged in to Halo 2.

Surely, Microsoft should be quite angry that this is happening, but this isn’t the case. Over on his podcast, Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hyrb addressed the topic.

“We’re not shutting them off”, said Hyrb. “Were going to let them go.”

“If you’re one of the ‘Halo 2 twelve’ still playing, know that we’re rooting for you, we think what you’re doing is great, and [we] are not going to pull the rug out from under you”.

It looks like Microsoft is just going to sit back and watch the service die on its own. It’s inevitable that the twelve will dwindle as systems overheat or, more likely, power or internet connections fail. Microsoft should award these 12 eccentric souls for their efforts in keeping the popular first person shooter from going quietly into the night.
