Rumor: Linux systems to receive Steam support?

May 3, 2010

With Steam now on Mac systems, things are getting a little interesting if what some intrepid users found while sifting through the program’s data show a sign of things to come.

Within the coding of the Mac client is a list of operating systems which helps the Steam client understand what it’s running on. Some of those were Linux operating systems, which even included several binaries.

Some users managed to get a few of the binaries to run, which results in a Steam client window appearing, as pictured above.

Valve hasn’t responded to these finding, though if it’s anything like the discovery of a Mac Steam client a while ago, it’s very likely we’ll be seeing Steam on Linux in the near future.
