Nintendo allows turning off 3D on Nintendo 3DS

May 10, 2010

Well, that defeats the whole purpose of this device.

In an interview with Forbes, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said the company’s next handheld, the Nintendo 3DS (which allows for 3D gaming without having to wear ridiculous glasses), will give players the option to toggle the 3D visuals on or off. The option apparently addresses issues people had with possible health effects from 3D gaming, like messing with children’s eyesight. Maybe that’s really why Sony thinks kids won’t like it.

Does this mean we’ll essentially be playing games designed in 2D with cheesy 3D visuals simply tacked on? I surely hope that’s not the case. We’ll find out more this summer at E3, when Nintendo is set to unveil the 3D device.
