PSA: Steam live on Mac, Portal free until May 24

May 12, 2010

Mac OS X users, welcome to the future…

Finally.

Since 2003, gamers with Windows-based PCs have enjoyed Valve Software’s digital distribution service, Steam, and it was surely something to stick their tongues out over at their Mac-using counterparts. Today, Mac users can give those dudes the finger. Steam launched for Mac OS X today, and as a celebratory bonus, Valve is offering its soon-to-be sequelized first-person puzzle game Portal for free until May 24. Needless to say, if you’re a gamer with a Mac, you should stop reading this poorly written baloney and download Portal. Go, stupid.

There are 63 downloadable games available now for Mac users on Steam, some of which include Runic Game’s dungeon crawler Torchlight, Jonathan Blow’s time-bending platformer Braid and Sid Meier’s Civilization IV. Each Wednesday, Valve will update the catalog, so don’t fret if you don’t see your favorite title on there just yet. Oh, and for those of you who’ve made the switch from Windows to Mac recently, don’t worry, all the games you downloaded on your Windows Steam account can be re-downloaded on your Mac — free of charge.

Happy gaming!
