[Update]Finally! Dragon Quest IX coming to North America this July

May 19, 2010

It’s been a year since Dragon Quest IX released in Japan, and North American gamers were salivating for a localized version of the DS RPG for just as long. I have no idea what kind of image to convey at the moment that relates to a stoppage in salivating, so, well, stop salivating — Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies is finally coming to this side of the world.

Square Enix announced today the Japanese hit, which has sold 4.2 million copies to date, will be on shelves in North America on July 11. Europeans will have to wait a few more days to get their hands on it on July 23. The game’s interesting “Pass-by Guest” feature, which allows players to leave their game active and automatically receive information from local players, will remain intact in both versions (in North America it’s called “Tag Mode,” while in Europe it’s called “Canvassing mode”). There’s still four-player co-op, purdy visuals and a thousand pieces of armor for you obsessive compulsive types to enjoy collecting.

And if that’s not enough, Square Enix says there’ll be some DLC for the game after its release. So if you’re an RPG fan and a DS owner, make it a point to pick this up in July, and let Japan know they can stop shouting “nanny nanny poo poo” at you.

[Update: Nintendo is actually the company publishing the title in the U.S. — not Square Enix.]
