E3 2010: Project Sora revealed as Kid Icarus 3DS

June 15, 2010

One of the biggest shockers of Nintendo’s show came in right at the end during the Nintendo 3DS presentation, when Nintendo President Satoru Iwata revealed that a project with Masahiro Sakurai, who’s behind Super Smash Bros. and Kirby, codenamed “Project Sora” was really a revitalization of Kid Icarus called Kid Icarus Uprising.

Kid Icarus hasn’t had much attention in the 23 years since its release, aside from a release on the Wii’s Virtual Console and with main character Pit as a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

The title features fast paced combat and action segments, with players fending off swarms of enemies and easily taking to the air with Pit’s wings. Sky battles resemble  a shoot-em-up, with Pit firing lasers at enemies flying toward him.

The game already looks visually impressive, even without the 3D filter applied, at level with some Gamecube and Wii titles.

Not much else was revealed about the title other than a vague “Coming Soon” time frame. And yes… my jaw dropped too.
