E3 2010: Sony reveals new PS3 Twisted Metal

June 15, 2010

Surprise! Sweet Tooth is back, ladies and gents!

The dark vehicle combat game Twisted Metal was just revealed by Sony in stylish fashion. They didn’t just show a trailer: They had a fat dude dressed like Sweet Tooth drive a truck on to the stage, then had the developers come on stage to show off some gameplay from the title. It’s currently scheduled for a 2011 release.

The developers promised the classic gameplay will remain intact, but from what I remember of the series, it doesn’t really look like the classic gameplay — and that is absolutely not a bad thing. The first gameplay they showed was a multiplayer deathmatch, er, match, in which we saw the usual grounded vehicular-combat and (!) airborne combat via helicopter. It looks like you’ll be able to fly the chopper around and then shoot from the chopper in first-person with a rapid machine gun thing. The developers said while flying around a map has its advantages, you must be wary of snipers: The gameplay trailer showed some characters stopping their vehicles, then leaning out the passenger window to aim and fire a sniper rifle in first-person. Pretty neat stuff.

Next, they showed off a multiplayer game mode called Nuke, which appears to be their twisted (bam!) version of capture the flag — except this one would be more aptly called “capture the opposing team’s leader, bring him back to your base, strap him on to a missile and then use said missile to shoot down a giant statue depicting the leader strapped on to the missile.” It looks insane — especially in the level they showcased it on. The map looked like a fairly large city, decked out with what appeared to be regular operating expressways and multiple-level buildings you can drive up to gain leverage advantages. The statues of each respective faction leader hang from cranes in the level and are not affected by regular weapons — only the missile launched by sacrificing the opposing team’s leader can damage it.

They promised 16 player online multiplayer, as well as two to four player online splitscreen.

I must say, this one is looking pretty sweet. Welcome back, Twisted Metal. We missed you.

I wish there was footage.. I haven’t check anywhere else online.. but I should.

As long as the game is not as hard as Twisted Metal Black.. and fun like Twisted Metal 2 and 3.. I have no worries… Twisted Metal 4 was garbage though…. SOOOO FREAKKKINGGG BAD.

I like the stories and the gameplay that TM has always brought. Sign me up. I call Warthog :D

The footage looked sweet, man. I’m really liking how utterly ridiculous Nuke mode is. Look around for a vid of Sony’s keynote. Footage is right right at the end.

YES! I loved Twisted Metal, and I hope they do this one right. I can say that back at the big screen we can’t wait.
